Bridging gap between gays, Catholic church | NJ.com

From his perch as editor at large at America Magazine in Manhattan, the Rev. James Martin, S.J., has published 14 books that fly off the shelves. He is in demand as a speaker. And his social media following is huge.

Yet his next book is getting a book launch — a first for Martin — at one of the oldest restaurants in Hoboken, Elysian Cafe, on June 12, the day before the book’s release. It’s possibly the topic — the LGBT community and the Catholic church — that will make it a hot property. And three of his boosters will make it even more a must-read.

Two cardinals, including Newark’s Joseph Tobin, and the Bishop of San Diego have endorsed it.

“Father Martin’s brave, prophetic and inspiring new book marks an essential step in inviting church leaders to minister with more compassion,” Tobin wrote for the book jacket.
