Since taking office, Donald Trump has done everything in his power to win the hearts and minds of white evangelicals, and they in turn have become his staunchest supporters. In Virginia Tuesday, Ed Gillespie and his fellow Republicans discovered the perils of this strategy.

  1. Finally it’s got through that there’s more to life (and especially to politics and government) than a few reactionary slogans. I suspect the views of the opposition candidate were exaggerated and distorted in this campaign flyer, but in a country where Nazis can be described as “fine people” by Trump, and Texan rulers can declare that churches need armed guards, and, preferably, worshippers should all bring a gun along with their collection envelopes, it’s easy to see all sense of reality has fled.
    Even in the violent Middle Ages, it was not permissible to take a sword into church, and as for what Jesus would have thought…
